German family run business Ostheimer, have been handcrafting natural wooden toys for more than sixty years. Figurines and animals are individually hand carved from native hardwoods such as maple and ash, all sourced from local sustainable forests. Each toy is cut out and sanded by hand to achieve the typically soft edged form of Ostheimer figures, before being hand painted using non-toxic colours. The simple designs and natural materials used are in deliberate contrast to today’s high tech games and, inspired by the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, Ostheimer aim to encourage children to use their imaginations whilst playing with them.
