Firmly ensconced in the creative melting pot that is Brooklyn, New York jewellery designer Randi Mates’ former career and studies as a historian continue to permeate her collections. “I am constantly looking at nature,” says Mates. “I love the way pavement cracks over time, antique botanical specimens, the burnished gleam of a wooden handrail…time and its effects fascinate me.”
Inspired by classical Greek and Roman metal work techniques, Mates launched her jewellery label, AESA, in 2006. The handmade pieces evoke memories of unearthed museum treasures that, once fused with Mates' unique fashion sensibility, result in a collection with a unique contemporary edge.
