Margo: London Calling

This season we welcome Margo to the Couverture fold. With influences ranging from music, art and nature, this London based design duo plays homage to Prince with vibrant accents of purple which run throughout the collection. Taking cues from the ‘geekiness’ of Jarvis Cocker and print inspiration from Jackson Pollock, the result is imperfectly perfect. Fluid fabrics in oversized silhouettes are combined with playful frills and masculine tailoring. Shimmering pinks and tactile textures all work together to create a collection rich in detailing. Intricate, silk flower embellishment is unexpectedly raw and unfinished. Designed to layer, statement pieces are underplayed and dressed down to create a look that can be adopted for day or night.

As the exclusive UK stockist, we wanted to give you an inside scoop on the London based design duo and new collection. Introducing Charlotte and Bronwen. How was Margo conceived? We studied together and have been best friends ever since. Our careers took different paths but we brought our experiences and skills together to create Margo, which is an amalgamation of our second names: Mar from Marshall and Go from Good. I (Bronwen) had the idea on New Year’s Day and when I put the idea to Charlotte it felt like a marriage proposal… Luckily she said yes! What was your inspiration behind the Autumn Winter collection? We start with fabrics and create a palette of colours and textures and then the shapes and ideas start to spring from there. As always, we get inspiration from a constant mash up of art, music and nature. This season in particular it was abstract impressionists like Miro and Pollock and the retro nerdy-ness of Jarvis Cocker. The soundtrack in the studio shapes the mood a lot of the time. There’s plenty of purple, too, in an ode to Prince. Who is the Margo woman? We see her as a confident woman with a good sense of humour: a woman who wants to look effortless and relaxed but isn’t afraid to experiment with bold colour or interesting fabrications and have fun. What is your favourite spot in London to go for inspiration? We love both of the Tates and The Barbican, including the botanical green house. Gardens and parks in London are amazing – nearby we’ve got Walthamstow Marshes and The William Morris Gallery. We also pop into the Imperial War Museum sometimes for funny little detail ideas. What’s your top styling tip? We’re all about layering! The more layers the better. This season our lurex polo neck will be the ultimate layering piece – worn under dresses, shirts or jumpers to add a bit of sparkle to the greyest winter days! What are your go-to style essentials? Charlotte – My look is generally loose and relaxed, the more oversized the better. My go-to pieces are definitely a wafty dress or wide leg pant, oversized shirt and trainers. I also can’t live without my Breton stripe tees and sparkly socks. Bronwen - Socks and sandals, men’s shirts, comfy jumpers and an extensive array of trench coats. I studied menswear so I tend towards a more androgynous look. Why Couverture? We are so excited to secure Couverture as our first London stockist. They are a leading independent retailer that proactively support emerging designers like us.
