Mountain Research - Japanese Outdoor Wear

Founded by Setsumasa Kobayashi, Mountain Research is a Japanese brand firmly inspired by the utility and personality of life outdoors. Yet for SS19, they have focused on an anti-establishment narrative that takes them from the wild and into the city.

Each season, the Mountain Research team clear their minds, depart from Tokyo and head two-hours north to the Chichibu Mountain Range in Northeast Japan. Each season sees the team scrutinise the archetypal aspects of functionality and durability as well as the underlying philosophies and attitudes of their creative and personal direction.

As the owner of Cow Books in Meguro City, Kobayashi specialised in out-of-print books from rebellious authors, poets, social pioneers and activists. It is the latter that has inspired the spring summer 2019 collection, fusing the language and ideas of progressive art forms into rugged clothing for the contemporary innovator.

Supported by the brand’s masked-bear, statement pieces include the Open Collar Shirt and matching Pajama Pants, the Anti Water Cannon Coat that flaunts their technical abilities along side the x4 Bear Scarf, inspired by traditional camping gear, featuring a monochrome bear logo print with the ‘Anarcho Mountaineer’ slogan in the middle.
