Launched in 2001, American born designer Rachel Comey’s label has fast become the uniform of choice for cool downtown girls with its vintage inspired, rock and roll feel. Worn by the likes of Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kirsten Dunst and Courtney Love, few are aware that the former Theory design consultant originally started out as a menswear label (David Bowie wore a Rachel Comey shirt on Letterman.) However such was the popularity of the men’s collection with women (they bought up all the small sizes in Barneys) that in 2003 she launched her womenswear line, which is now the mainstay of the brand. Comey explains, “Materials, craftsmanship, utility and a sense of humour are important in my collections…I don't like things to be too accessorized, but I do like them to be playful.”
