Jewellery Care Guide

Jewellery is made to be worn and loved, and with a little care it will last for many years. This guide offers simple advice on how to wear, clean, and store your pieces.

Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is made of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. It is durable but can tarnish naturally over time due to air, moisture, chemicals, cosmetics, salt, or sulphur. This is normal and does not indicate a fault.

Wearing

  • Regular wear can reduce tarnishing.
  • Remove jewellery when showering, swimming, or doing activities that expose it to sweat, chlorine, or salt water.
  • Remove before applying perfumes, lotions, or cosmetics.

Cleaning

  • Wash with warm soapy water and wipe gently with a soft polishing cloth.
  • Dry thoroughly to prevent moisture-related tarnish.

Storage

  • Keep pieces in a cool, dry place, ideally in their box or an anti-tarnish pouch.
  • Store items separately to avoid scratches.

Solid Gold

Solid gold is durable and naturally resistant to tarnish. Higher-karat gold is softer and more prone to scratches, while lower-karat gold is harder due to alloyed metals. 9ct gold may tarnish slightly on the surface, but this is normal and can be gently polished to restore its shine.

Wearing Your Jewellery

  • Solid gold can be worn daily and during normal activities without risk of tarnishing.
  • Remove jewellery during intense exercise, or activities where it could bend, scratch, or catch.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals or chlorinated water, which can affect lower-karat alloys.

Cleaning Your Jewellery

  • Clean gently with warm soapy water and a soft cloth.
  • Dry thoroughly after cleaning to preserve shine.

Storage

  • Store gold jewellery in a cool, dry place, ideally in its supplied box or a soft pouch.
  • Keep pieces separate to prevent scratches.

Gold-Plating

Gold-plated jewellery has a thin layer of gold over a base metal such as silver or brass. With care, plating lasts for several years but will wear naturally over time.

Wearing

  • Avoid chemicals, perfumes, lotions, or acidic sweat.
  • Remove before showering, swimming, or activities that may scratch or bend the piece.

Cleaning

  • Wipe gently with a soft cloth.
  • Occasionally wash with warm water and mild detergent, rinse thoroughly, and dry immediately.
  • Avoid harsh cleaners or scrubbing.

Storage

  • Keep in a soft pouch or box, separate from other jewellery.

Additional information

  • Re-plating is offered at many jewellers for pieces that have worn over time.
